Too Damn Subtle
The singing was over and the candle was blown out, so I leaned forward and said, "I just wanted to say that I think it's really terrific to be here in Libby's hometown with her family, and my parents, from my home, and to have Libby and my friends from home here, too." I looked at each group as I mentioned them. "It really warms my heart."
I didn't shut up, though.
"I've always thought that the most important part of home was the middle part, the Om part.
"In Hinduism, the Om is the spirit, the soul. And I have been lucky enough to find someone in Libby to help complete my soul.
"One of the things that represent the Om is the cobra," and I pulled a 10 rupee copper ring out of my pocket, "which is what this ring is. Libby's agreed to ring this cheap, 25 cent cobra ring until we find a more suitable one."
And I slipped the ring onto her finger.
The 14 other people at the table said, "Aaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwww," and started to reach for their dessert spoons and coffee cups.
"We're engaged, by the way," Libby said a moment later, after an awkward realization.
The 14 other people at the table started clapping and cheering.
"Shit," I muttered. "Too damn subtle, once again."
Mike, sitting next to me, said, "We got it."
And Jen leaned forward and said, "I always thought the important part of home was the ho."
And then Jerko text messaged me, saying, "Oh God. I'm going drinking with [Uncle] Steve. What have I done to myself"

It seems to be going around these parts. I've been hitched over ten years now and I can honestly say that it's one of the top three decisions I've ever made.
