Luddites Go Home

So I spent the better part of the last week almost completely detached from the technology that generally surrounds my every waking (and most of my sleeping) moments. No TV, no internet, no phone... it sucked a lot.

I know, I know, you're all sitting there shaking your heads, pittying me in that smug way that you tend to do when this subject comes up. "People watch too much TV anyway" ... "Read a book" ... "Get your porn in magazines" ... I've heard it before and I say fuck all of you.

I'm used to a world where I have a computer on the 'net and a TV on cable simultaneously almost all the time -- and that's at home. At work it's frequently two computers and six TVs on different channels. I like it that way.

Maybe this disco ball of technology just feeds my ADD, but regardless, when you take it all away there's a massive void that remains unfilled by "books" and "nature" and "conversation" and all that crap.

I did sit down and read a book -- a Stephen King book I'd never heard of -- and it was good and I enjoyed it, but when I finished, all I wanted to do is get on the internet and see if it had ever been optioned for a movie or if plot points had been incorporated into other works, etc., but all I was left with was the book, sitting in my hand doing nothing extraordinary at all... just sitting there not answering my questions or offering any useful information whatsoever, save for a really old picture of the author. (if you're interested the book is Roadwork and is good, but very un-Stephen King, probably why it was published under the Richard Bachman moniker).

Anyway, two days away from the world of silicon (chips and tits) is doable... five days is just too much. Call me shallow if you must, but right now it's almost midnight and i'm posting to FTBM, checking my email, watching a Euro 2004 match replay that I know the result of (WTF is the deal with Greece?), and I couldn't be more content -- if that makes me shallow, then so be it.

I think I'll go porn surfing now.
